When Your T-Shirt Talks, Everybody Listens

Your t-shirt called. It wants its voice back. Yes, the tees of today aren’t satisfied with being just a simple color-coordinated fit to your ensemble. The modern tee wants to be seen and heard.

More daring than anything in the past, today’s graphic tees range from the rude to the downright raunchy. They entertain us, they offend us, they challenge our perceptions, all while providing insight into their owners’ minds like never before.

A good t-shirt does more than merely elicit a chuckle from a coworker or a stare from a stranger, it tells others about who you are as a person, what makes you tick, what you stand for.

Ever wonder why you see so many of these funny tees featured in films lately? Rather than waste countless pages of a script trying to develop a character, writers smartly discovered that simply putting an actor in the right shirt can tell us exactly what kind of guy he is.

You simply can’t watch a good slacker movie these days without seeing a main actor wearing a cool, and often profane, graphic tee. Every modern-day coming of age flick, from Knocked Up to Superbad to Juno seems to feature one.

Some of these crazy shirts reference the wearer’s sexual philosophy (e.g. “Hit it and Quit it”), while other tees make subtle cultural statements about the meaning of marriage (See: Game Over). The common thread in all of these funny or offensive t-shirts is that they get the message across without saying a word.

Call it a trend. Call it a geek’s revenge. Whatever it is, it’s the hottest new anti-fashion movement. And like Heidi says, if you’re not in, you’re out.

Yes, we’ve quickly become a nation of walking billboards. One where a proper sartorial display of crude wit and urban sophistication can break the ice and gain you instant acceptance into the cool crowd.

It’s advertising at its best. Only this time, your sense of humor is what you’re branding. That, and your awesomeness, of course.

With the right t-shirt, you can show total strangers just how clever and confident you are. Things about your personality that were once hidden and opaque to the world, ironically become more transparent with each comfy layer of cotton. That is the magic of a really good t-shirt.

So make sure your next shirt says all the right things about you. Ditch the plain white and go for something with a crazy saying or hilarious slogan.
